Top Tips for Enjoying Local Street Food Globally

Floating market in Thailand

Go to the Local Market: When I travel, I like to head to the market and sample the local delicacies. I must admit my palate is quite adventurous which makes trying new foods fun. This is also a way to immerse yourself into the local culture, connect with the community members and support small business.

Focus on Small Businesses like Street Food Vendors: When I was in Turkey, we found this vendor selling kababs. We grabbed a low wooden block and sat on the street eating amazing food. When travelling at night in Bangkok, I admittedly was on a street food tour, but the locals were filling up most of the chairs enjoying their favourites with their families.

Look for the Busiest Restaurants: In Rome, my friends and I walked away the tourist path and headed to a community where lunch was being served. Men in construction uniforms came in and ordered their lunch. A cacophony of yelling voices, bells and cutlery clanging made the experience exciting. It was the most inexpensive meal of the entire trip.

Do Your Research: Planning trips is almost as exciting as the trip itself. Check out the local delicacies and traditions. Many times, there are special foods only served at certain times of the year. If you have the luck of travelling during those times, be sure to try them.

Sign up for a Food Tour or Cooking Class: There are many food tours available. I use Viator to search for food tours by city. Food tours get you into places you normally wouldn’t find on your own and you can sample delights.  Cooking classes are a perfect way to meet local chef or cooks and many classes are held in local homes. What a perfect way to eat like a local.
