A Little Background
I decided to give my travel business to a Canadian firm (Approach Tours) and with another milestone birthday approaching, I will treat myself by travelling in style.
Usually, I pack light but since this is an all inclusive holiday where I don’t have to worry about porterage, accommodations, meals, tips, internal flights, etc. I will be packing the big bag with some room remaining. Also, we will have internal flights with some weight restrictions so packing a little lighter might be a good idea.
My cousin Shannon will also be sharing the experience with me. We both have October birthdays and plan to celebrate another trip around the sun in style.
We are disappointed that Shannon’s parents (Gerry and Carol) will not be coming with us and send our love and wishes for G’s speedy recovery. It is terrific news, he is on the mend. You are definitely in our hearts and we will most certainly be in contact.

Flying the Friendly Skies
We flew a less than direct route to Cape Town and considering the amount of kilometres and the number of hours it took to get here. I feel pretty good.
Air Canada Express – Toronto to Newark, New Jersey
United Airlines – Newark to Johannesburg, South Africa
Airlink – Johannesburg to Cape Town, South Africa

Our flight left at 5:30 PM from Toronto with a direct flight to Newark, New Jersey. We had a 2.5 hour layover in Jersey before boarding a 15.5 hour flight to Johannesburg. In Johannesburg, we had a 2 hour layover before catching a 1 hour, 50 minute flight to Cape Town.
All the flights were on time and the impressive part was we travelled on three different carriers, and our bags went straight through to Cape Town without being lost or delayed. I highly recommend upgrading to Premium Economy seats or higher for the long haul flights.
Sep 17 5:25 pm departure
Sep 18 10:50 pm arrival
We went through U.S. customs in Toronto with no issue and South African customs in Johannesburg, again no issue. Our driver, Ambrose, was waiting for us in Cape Town to promptly and pleasantly take us to our hotel.
A religious group in long white robes were joyously singing in the Arrivals area It was beautiful, and I couldn’t get the smile off my face.

The lobby of the Rockefeller Hotel was chaotic as a tour group had just arrived but it wasn’t long before we were in our room.
We came in a day earlier than our tour group in order to do a little more exploring and adjust to the time difference.
After a quick shower, I hopped into bed to catch some zzzz’s before our next day of exploring. I can’t wait!
