Using Your Cellular Phone While Travelling

Although we enjoy our time away from our regular schedule, we still love to be connected to our family and friends back home. You might also need to stay in touch with work.

Usually, staying connected is easy when we have access to WIFI, and some of our cellphone providers are more than happy to give you full access to your phone at a cost. That cost can be exorbitant. The first time I travelled for 2 months, I came back to a $300 bill plus my regular monthly charges. It was an eye-opener and I learned quickly to find an alternative for my next trip.

Phones built from 2010 onwards have digital e-SIM (embedded SIM) capability. No longer do you need to remove data cards. It is all digital now and there are quite a few companies out there that will sell you a plan for data, and even phone use. I use an e-SIM for my iPhone but they are also compatible with Android phones.

Benefits of eSIMs:

  • Less expensive – No roaming charges, the plans use local data providers.
  • Easy to top up – if you find you are using more data, most plans allow you easily top-up your data.
  • Simple installation – each provider has instructions and usually good customer support.
  • Flexibility – plans are offered for local, regional, and global use. You choose which plan and how much data you need. Example: when I travel to Spain, I have the option to purchase one plan just for Spain, or if I am travelling further in Europe, I can purchase a regional plan that covers 42 countries. Usually, I purchase a regional plan because I transit through Germany, France or the United Kingdom and if I have a layover, I will have coverage.
  • Convenience – you will always have access to your emails, maps, social media. You can the eSIM up before you leave and activate it when you arrive at your destination.
  • Secure – data cards can’t be removed if your phone is stolen because there isn’t a data card anymore.

Cyber Safety Tips When Travelling

  • Use strong passcodes.
  • Use dual sign in protocol. I know it’s a pain but it is for your protection.
  • Update your phone with the latest version before leaving home.
  • Avoid public WIFI, and don’t use unsecured public hotspots for sensitive activities.
  • Use a VPN such as NordVPN to ensure additional security. HIGH RECOMMEND
  • Avoid charging via unknown USB connections (such as airports). Malware can be placed on your phone.
  • Don’t click unknown links.
  • Power down your phone before heading through security.
  • Watch your phone at all times, be discreet when signing in.

The safety tips apply to the use of a laptop or tablet also. Be vigilant!
