The sun is shining and not a cloud in the sky. I head to the sea and the promenade. Torre del Mar (TDM) has a 4 kilometre promenade that runs in front of Poniente and Levante beaches and connects TDM with Caleta de Velez at one end, and Almayate at the other. It has a dedicated bike lane where you can rent bicycles, scooters and 4-seater peddle-bikes. Runners weave in and around the strollers and pedestrians.

Today, I’m strolling along taking in the beauty of the sea, and the warmth of the sun on my face and shoulders. A pleasant 17C. Fresh sea air fills my lungs and I feel my shoulders relax as a smile is etched on my face. I hit my step goal by 11:00 am.

The sea is calm and in the distance there are fishing boats trawling for their next catch. I can’t wait for a fish meal and even more, espetos (grilled sardines). Locals and foreigners are walking their dogs, chatting loudly. I discreetly eavesdrop to see if I recognize any words. Some. The Spanish speak so quickly.

Post-dinner walk,
The lights are shining in Caleta de Velez

My Spanish needs some fine-tuning. I’m proud that I was able to use it to introduce myself to the property manager, ask for a hair dryer and order a product from the local health food store; well, I hope I did. I’ll know on Friday if it comes in.

I’m able to read in Spanish for the most part but getting phrases from my head and out my mouth is a lot slower. I use the phrase “Despacio por favor” (Slower please) quite frequently! The locals get a giggle, but appreciate when you try.

Torre del Mar is in the Andalusia region and they have their own dialect and phrases. I would have to totally immerse myself for years to become proficient. For now, I can get by as a tourista.

I will not be posting every day, but will when I experience something worth sharing.

As a footnote, Marcus, my first-born grandson, turned 16 on Feb 4th. I missed being there in person on his big day but we celebrated it earlier. Happy birthday Marcus! Hope it was a good one.
